Aggregate Sources in San Diego County

There are four types of deposits in San Diego County that support the construction aggregates industry.
Stadium/Poway Conglomerate
Stadium/Poway Conglomerate is a mixture of sand, rock, and dirt.

Peninsula Range: Granitic Rock
The Peninsula Range consists of granitic rock, an abundant resource for the construction aggregate industry in San Diego County.

Santiago Peak Formation: Metavolcanic
The Santiago Peak Formation provides San Diego's construction aggregate industry with metavolcanic rock.

Alluvial Valley: Sand and gravel
Alluvial valleys, or rivers, are San Diego's most abundant source of sand. However, regulations and depletion have essentially halted sand production in San Diego County requiring large importation projects for sand, mainly from Mexico, Riverside and Imperial Counties.
